Mid-Centruy Modern Home
Encino, CA
Project Description
Renovation of this 1955 four bedroom home in Encino, CA was a challenge as it needed to remain inhabited throughout the work. The construction was phased into smaller pieces to accomplish this.
The home was stripped down to the original structure, the space reconfigured for the new program, and rebuilt to a very high level of energy efficiency — while maintaining the original architect’s (Robert Stern) design intention and its iconic mid-century modern appearance. Of primary importance was increasing natural light into the home while decreasing energy usage.
The landscape design involved using natives and drought tolerant plantings, replacing the irrigation system, and screening the views into the backyard from the two-story home next door.
